Christian Music, The History and Evolution of God’s Songs
Christian contemporary music has experienced significant change over time. The origins of this relatively new genre can be traced to the Jesus Movement of the late 60’s. Bands just like Larry Norman paved the way for the huge popularity of today’s christian music performers. Throughout that phase there had been also songs launched on the mainstream airwaves which praised Jesus and thereby delivered his message to an even wider audience. Songs like “Put Your Hand in the Hand” by Ocean even managed to get high inside the hot 100. Of course there were critics who felt the life style that rock stars led would be detrimental to the message . However it turned out, many non-believers were led to Christ as a result of these songs. The performer’s lifestyles notwithstanding.
As you might expect, as recognition continued to rise, lesser talented musicians tried to “cash in” on the phenomena. Several musicians who may not have been gifted enough to make it mainstream had been releasing a quantity of sub par God songs. This is a problem that many fledgling music genres have suffered over the years. Were these artists honestly trying to deliver Christ’s message? Or were they trying to create a fast greenback? Only our Lord understands the heart of man.
Fortunately, most of these less-gifted bands have been rapidly overtaken by authentic talents. Christian musicians akin to Petra, an early pioneer in Christian rock formed in 1972, started to experience skyrocketing popularity in the 80’s. Petra essentially set the standard for all subsequent Christian musicians. The quality of Godly songs by Christian artists really started to improve. There truly was a wide variety of top quality Christian music to fit all tastes.
Petra’s popularity lasted well into 90s, and spawned many bands who would approach similar popularity levels with toally different sounds. DC Talk went from Christian hip hop to a lot more of a grunge sound. T- Bone started out to release a Christian alternative to gangsta rap.It is true, the 90s gave birth to the golden age in Christian music. Today Christian music is a widely accepted and well known music genre. Artists just like Jars of Clay release albums that debut on the billboard mainstream charts. Christian Music Singers star in feature films , such as T- Bone in “The Fighting Temptations. ” God songs can be often heard in well known mainstream TV shows. Of course there are still detractors, but this should not discourage individuals from researching and enjoying Christian music.
